I squeezed, looking Alaric in the eye while my entire soul was focused on the shadow standing behind him. "I want a man who is here, Alaric. Not a ghost. Not someone who hides." Caleb’s chest heaved. I saw the muscles in his jaw twitch with a violence that made the silver tureen rattle. He was a man drowning in his own silence, forced to watch the woman he loved offer herself to a vulture. "Ze gravy," Caleb announced. His voice wasn't the gravelly Frenchman's anymore. It was a low, vibrating growl, a warning from a predator pushed to the brink. "She is... unstable. Like ze emotions, non?"

The chairman asked again. “I was wrong…” he sobbed. “She was just worried about me but I told her that I don’t need her because she was not my real mother. I was just so afraid that she would no longer love me because she already had a baby!” Caleb took a sip of water from his glass before he continued, “I’ve been thinking about what the old woman told me. When my mother gives birth to my sibling, she would no longer love me. I don’t want that! I know that my mom loves me, but she had been too busy that she even forgot about me lately.”

It seemed she could read my mind as she cleared her throat and faced me. “Caleb's parents died when he was just four so he didn't know his parents that well. Mr Walker adopted him as his own son and loved him just like his own. Owen doesn't see Caleb as his cousin but rather his brother. Their bond is so strong that if you didn't know the history, you'd call them a complete family.”

His mother was silent. “You know moving on has been impossible for me,” Caleb continued, his voice raw. “I was never able to love anyone else. Until now.” My heart skipped a beat. “This is the first time I’ve felt happy since Bridget,” he admitted. “I love Sophia.” I pressed a hand to my chest, my pulse racing. “I love her so much, Mom. I can’t imagine living without her.” I closed my eyes. The way he said it. The conviction. The desperation.

“I was learning about what really happened between Prince Evan and Summer Robbins.” Caleb straightens so quickly, it’s as if I slapped him. Though even a physical blow from me wouldn’t have hurt him as much as my words seemed to. I am merely a human after all, not a werewolf like him. “The omega and my brother…” Caleb says. “They were in love,” I say. For a moment, I think of revealing that Summer was pregnant, which likely had been trigger for much of this heartache and hostility. But, remembering how diligently Caleb searched for the non-existent child of ours, I decide to leave the existence of the child a secret from him.

Slowly, her eyes opened, and she stared at the ceiling above. “I was dead, right… so why am I in my room? Am I dreaming?” To confirm, she checked the date on her phone. The moment she saw it, her eyes widened in shock—had she gone five years back in time? The news on the TV showed the same date. Sia became certain that she had been reborn. She thanked God and made a promise to herself that this time, she would live for herself. She remembered how Ritu had come to her in anger today and troubled her, after which Sia had taken three or four sleeping pills in her room.

But Jade—that was a different matter altogether. Caleb did his best to hold back his tears, but it was a futile effort. He had loved this boy more than he could ever possibly express, had seen all his hopes and wishes and dreams in him. It was not possible for full-blood vampires to procreate, and this boy had been the product of his union with Sera before he’d turned her. It was an illegal union, which was later sanctioned, and thus Caleb was one of the few vampires who actually had a child. But a child like this would never come along again, he knew. As he rode, as he looked down at the body, he knew that all his hopes and dreams would be buried with it.

She gave birth to caleb but one day she died in an accident. The Callahan family had taken Caleb in without hesitation. The family treated caleb very good because there were not many members in the family. Though they were strict, Damien’s mother and grandmother had always treated Caleb with love and devotion. At times, Damien even felt as if his mother and grandmother gave Caleb more attention than they gave him. The idea of his mother throwing Caleb out of the house seemed almost impossible.

Jostein speaks again, “Caleb and Alberto is a good person. They will have their own family with their own genes.”
