Honestly, I’ve spent way too much time combing through the 'Camp Camp' tag for these two, and I think the real standout stories are less about the explicit romance and more about the specific dynamic they’re trying to capture. A lot of fics just slap the ship label on a generic enemies-to-lovers template, which feels lazy. The good ones really dig into Neil’s anxious, science-driven worldview butting against Max’s cynical, survivalist exterior. They’re both deeply mistrustful kids who’ve built walls for different reasons, so the best stories have that slow, grudging realization that the other person might be the one exception to their rules.

My absolute favorite has to be 'A Study in Chaos Theory' on AO3. It’s unfinished, which kills me, but what’s there is so sharp. It’s not a campfire confession fic; it’s a whole AU where they’re stuck as lab partners in a terrible high school, and the author nails their voices. Max’s sarcasm isn’t just for punchlines, it’s a defense mechanism, and Neil’s lectures are laced with this genuine panic about getting things wrong. The build is so slow you almost miss the moment they shift from tolerating each other to actually, quietly relying on each other. The comments are full of people begging for updates, and I’m right there with them.

Another one that’s criminally underrated is 'Optimal Conditions.' It’s a post-canon fic exploring what happens if they end up at the same boarding school. It’s less about big dramatic moments and more about the quiet, weird domesticity they’d create—Neil trying to impose order on Max’s side of the room, Max secretly memorizing Neil’s allergy med schedule just to mess with him but also to make sure he has them. It feels real in a way a lot of shipfic doesn’t. Sometimes I think people forget they’re, like, ten, and the best fics remember that; the affection is shown through shared shitty camp food and muttered insults that somehow sound like ‘I’ve got your back.’
