After a while, I looked outside the windows to see the fleeting trees; it was a pleasant sight. Soon we arrived at camp, after a while of briefing, we scuttled around finding cabins to stay in, the rule of thumb was they were only ten cabins where two people alone could fit in and once those ten were filled up, we would have to live in the bigger sides with about fifteen people per room; I was sure everybody’s competitive spirit was riled up, because ain’t no way I was going to be stuck with gazillion girls.

“Come on. Let’s explore our little nest before the champagne arrives.” The girls’ cabin is, predictably, gorgeous. Three bedrooms branching off a shared living space, each one with a view of the forest and a bed piled with enough blankets to survive an apocalypse. The living area centers around a massive stone fireplace already burning with warmth, flanked by overstuffed sofas and a bar cart. Queenie claims the room closest to the bathroom with the enthusiasm of someone who has clearly suffered from limited hot water access in the past. Rayana takes the largest bedroom without asking, which tracks.

Isabelle looked down onto the widespread land beneath them. It was morning now and the entire ground was covered with thick layers of snow. A massive log cabin stood at the centre of vast grassland with pine trees and thick tall trees framing the clearing. The cabin was mainly built with sturdy logs and glass partitioned windows. The front of the house was hexagonally shaped with reflective glass. Cole had made it so for security reasons. Despite his tight security systems he still took precautions in the house's architectural design.

Zane's humiliation, my forced composure, Jovi's performance. "Group dinner in the main hall at 7!" the manager said, his voice too bright, trying to dispel the discomfort. I turned toward the path to the cabins. The directions showed Cabins 4 and 5 were adjacent, two small, identical wooden boxes side-by-side, overlooking the frozen lake. Cabin 1, the suite for Vance and Jovi, was set apart, up a small hill. I unlocked my door and stepped into the chilly, pine-scented silence. Through the thin wall, I could hear the muffled sound of Zane entering his own cabin next door. A door slammed.

He said the last part while laughing. I shake my head rolling my eyes and say “ currently the lay out is about half the size of the pack house that gives us about forty bed rooms altogether around eight half baths and almost a full bath to every bedroom. There will be a pool out here a fence around the property. We have a hot tub planned for a patio over there and this was just started so we don’t expect it to take much longer. As you know your pack is almost finished over there and your pack house is great and ready but this can be our home. It’s close to both pack houses and right by the store.”

I don’t have the patience to deal with them this week. We sign in at the desk and are handed our packets. Each one contains the usual itinerary, map, dorm keys, and an invitation for the end of summer Alpha conference. Back in the truck, we follow the map to the dorm cabins and park outside number 5. Grabbing our bags, we head inside to check it out. The setup is typical. Each cabin has a central kitchen and living space with bedrooms on either side. Each pack or team takes a side. Since it’s just Sam and me on my team right now, our side is going to be quiet. Not that I mind.

The question hangs heavier than it should. And my chest tightens. Because there is. Not something I meant to hide… just something I didn’t fully understand until now. My mind drifts back to the camp. The crescent formation. Huts and stone structures curving inward around a massive clearing. Everything faces the center, not for defense, but for focus. For reverence. The ground there is wrong. Scorched. Blackened. Marked with ancient symbols that seem to pulse faintly beneath my feet. And the witches…

' She gasps excitedly, and I wrestle her for my phone back, only for us to fall off the seat, giggling. 'Hailey! Mind your own business.' I blush. All the ladies except for Carol snicker. She is sitting there glaring, with her arms crossed. We arrive at our campsite at the Dandenong Ranges. Cora has organised a large oval marquee for all of us to sleep in. It’s massive and decorated with fairy lights and has a large round rug on the ground. There are double-sized, blow-up mattresses and a low, round coffee table in the middle, and cushions scattered around the table to sit on. It has a real boho vibe. Outside the tent there are log-seats, and a bonfire is already lit in the middle.

“I think we are gonna need a broom. And a mop.” Everly looked around the interior of the cabin again. She could see the living room and beyond it the doorway to the kitchen. To her right was a hallway that led to the bedrooms and bathroom. Her dad had told her there were two bedrooms and one bathroom. Above them was a small loft space, the stairs at the back of the living room, and then a tiny attic above that. The cabin was small. That was all there was to it. But there were only the two of them for now, plus Toby, and once she left for college next fall, there would only be her dad. Her dad—and the ghost of her mother.

For one thing, someone had probably removed furniture from the Bears’ cabin and brought it down here to make space for someone completely different than anyone they had encountered yet. Even though the bedding was unmade and filthy. The room resembled a small apartment for one maybe two people. This must be where this Hannibal Baptiste stayed. Again the mages fanned out in the room and started looking through things. One of the mage’s jumped back from a bookcase. “No one is to come near here. We have a magical trap. Someone see if they can get Dean here. I get the feeling we might have found something useful.”
