"Aaron, buddy, Mommy and I... we love you very much, but sometimes grown-ups can't stay together like Jacob and Jamie's mom and dad. It doesn't mean we don't love you, because we do. Very much."
Aaron's face scrunched up in confusion, and Evan could see the longing in his eyes.
"But why, Daddy? I want us to be a family like they are."
Evan's throat constricted as he struggled to explain. "Sometimes, even when we love each other, we can't make it work. But that doesn't mean we won't always be a family. We'll just be a different kind of family. And I promise, Aaron, I'll always be here for you, no matter what."
