The Core imploded. The shockwave didn't produce fire; it produced a vacuum of sound and light. For three seconds, the entire Jade fleet was plunged into a total eclipse. When the light returned, the flagship was sinking, its spine snapped. Vanya was gone, her armor found later as a heap of melted glass on the deck. The remaining Jade ships, seeing their flagship fall to a power they couldn't even quantify, didn't stay to fight. They cut their vine-anchors and fled into the deep mist, their solar-sails flickering like dying embers.

She always has a new gist whenever we talk. I pulled off my clothes and took a quick shower. Once I was done I tried to do my assignment, and when that didn't work cause I was a bit distracted by images of a certain captain, I turned on my laptop to read a book and when that didn't work either, I simply gave up and lied down to sleep. The sky had turned black and angry by the time Captain Isolde decided the night was ready for its final act. A violent storm had rolled in from the west, whipping the sea into white-capped fury. Rain lashed the deck of the *Siren's Revenge* in heavy sheets, thunder cracked overhead, and lightning illuminated the ship in brilliant flashes. The crew had secured the sails and tied down everything loose, but the main deck remained open, a perfect stage for what was about to happen.
