I struggled with this question when I first picked up 'Captive Prince'. Went in expecting a romance and got... something else entirely. The first book is rough, not gonna lie. Laurent is vicious, Damen’s situation is genuinely uncomfortable, and the power dynamics are so skewed it’s hard to see the romance through the political intrigue and violence.

That said, if you can push through the initial setup, the series evolves into one of the most satisfying slow-burn enemies-to-lovers arcs I've ever read. The trust and respect that develops between them is earned over three books, not handed out. It's less about grand gestures and more about subtle shifts in loyalty, shared glances across a council room, and defending each other’s backs when it matters. The romance is a slow-drip payoff that feels monumental by the end. So, for romance fans with a high threshold for initial darkness and a love for intricate political plotting, absolutely. For those who want fluff and instant attraction, steer clear.

I'll confess, I almost put 'Captive Prince' down in the first fifty pages because the power dynamic felt so starkly, uncomfortably one-sided. It's a testament to how the series develops that the initial setup—Damen literally enslaved and powerless in a foreign court—becomes this complex latticework where power shifts constantly. It’s never just about who holds the whip. Political power, the power of information, the power of reputation in the Veretian court, even the physical power Damen has but can’t use without revealing himself... they all weave together.

Loyalty gets twisted into unrecognizable shapes here. Is it loyalty to serve a prince you hate because it's your duty? Is loyalty to your nation more important than loyalty to your conscience? The series really digs into how loyalty is often a transaction, a fragile thing built on shifting sands of advantage and fear, until it slowly, painfully becomes something genuine. Even then, that genuine loyalty is tested by brutal political necessity. I found myself less interested in who would win the throne and more in whether any form of trust could survive that world.

I read 'Captive Prince' completely out of order because I accidentally started with book two, which was... an experience. My advice: stick to publication order. Read 'Captive Prince', then 'Prince's Gambit', and finish with 'Kings Rising'. Starting with book one is crucial for understanding the incredibly fraught dynamic between Damen and Laurent. The trilogy builds meticulously; the political tension and slow-burn relationship won't land if you jump ahead.

That said, there are two short stories, 'The Summer Palace' and 'The Adventures of Charls', which are best read after the main trilogy. They're lovely little epilogues that offer a softer, more settled glimpse of the characters, but they'll spoil the central romance arc if read first. The main three books are the core journey, and you really need to take that journey step by step.
