My footprints. I recognised them because I had put them there, lying down after a walk in the rain, with Woofy at my side. I had stretched my legs out and marked up the freshly painted ceiling. I was still in my little camper, in the back and on my back, but I was still in it. Crazy bitch Melanie hadn’t taken me to her psychopath lair just yet. “I know you're awake, Daniella.” Even her voice sent shivers up my spine. She sounded like she always had, but there was no longer even a trace of emotion in her voice. Nothing human.

“That was short and sweet.” “As was mine,” I grumbled. She shuddered. “I forgot that they faked your death. It’s a bit creepy to think that there’s a headstone out there with your name on it.” “I wonder if it says Esmerelda Sleuth or Esmerelda Northrup,” I mused. “We’ll have to check,” she said. “Unless you want to ask him really quickly.” I shook my head. “I can’t waste the magic. I just hate the fact that so much of it was used up by that creep Tillman. This may very well be my last communication with Lance. It sucks.”

“Especially Esmerelda. Not only has she seen a lot, but she’s had to get herself out of some pretty sticky situations when she uncovered things that people didn’t want uncovered.” Killian looked at me admiringly. “It takes a special kind of person to do your kind of work.” “So, Esmerelda, why did you have blood in your mouth?” she asked. “When I was in that trunk, I found a crowbar. When they opened the trunk, I belted one guy in the head with it. I cracked his skull, but I think he’s still alive. The other guy grabbed me before I could swing at him so I bit him in the neck. Unfortunately, I bit harder than expected into his jugular. I got a bit of his flesh and his blood in my mouth.”
