Isaac growled, bent as if to pounce. I could hear Ruthie swearing up a storm in the background, albeit, her own brand of swearing. Suddenly, a growl that was both feminine and deadly-sounding made Iosefa and Isaac swivel their heads in surprise. Caroline crouched near the side of the sofa, her head up and lips pulled back to show her elongated teeth. Her hands stretched out from her sides and her fingernails grew into long and pointy claws. My eyes widened and my chest clenched with fear. In a deep, guttural voice, Caroline demanded, "Get your hands off my daughter."

Kari's POV "Kari, do you have a moment?" Came the lyrical voice of my boss and best friend. I looked up from my computer screen and looked at her over the top of my glasses.
