They tore through flesh like paper. One old man said he saw a child disappear in the blink of an eye. There was no blood. No scream. Just… gone.” Sophia paled. Her fingers trembled as she reached into the folds of her robe and pulled out a tattered, leather-bound grimoire. She flipped the pages quickly. “I’ve read this before,” she muttered,. “Long ago. When I was a child. The signs… horned shadows, vanishing people, soulless fire. It’s not mortal.”

Maybe I could make sure it never consumed me—or anyone else—again. Edward found me still awake by dawn, the book open across my knees. “You didn’t sleep again,” he said quietly, rubbing his eyes. I looked up at him, guilt pricking my chest. “I’m sorry. I couldn’t stop reading.” He sat beside me, brushing his fingers over the brittle pages. “What is this?” “Mara gave it to me. It’s about the old bloodlines—the Flameborn, the Shadewalkers. I think it explains what happened to us.”

The gaps between entries got longer and longer, and he complained more and more about all the time he lost to his debilitating moods. The only thing that seemed to lift his spirits was finding a certain specialist bookseller. Matthew had continued to collect rare books on the occult, and he was always looking for book shops to sell the paper he wrote on the ancient forest. This bookseller not only took several copies of his paper, he also sold Matthew a unique grimoire by an unknown author. The grimoire fascinated Matthew, and he made notes on it in his journal. Sally couldn’t understand much of what he wrote, but she found one entry, towards the end of the journal, very interesting:

“It was supposed to be a simple hunting trip with a few friends.” “Speaking of friends. I wonder how Mark is doing with the SUV. I’d like to get the hell out of here,” Edwin whispered. “Do you plan on leaving them behind?” Tim asked in a hushed tone. “Do you want to ride in an SUV with a three-hundred-year-old, hungry vampire?” Edwin asked. “I don’t care how beautiful she is. I, for one, do not.” “She is a beauty, isn’t she?” Tim said as he watched Agatha release her hold on the vampire as she majestically emerged from the coffin.

“It's not like someone has to take that when I'm alone, right?” “Thanks,” Macey's smile has widened. “Macey, do you believe in supernatural creatures? Monsters? Werewolves?” He has cleared his throat, contemplating whether to resume his intentions... but she did proceed to her last example anyway. “Vampires?” “I don't? Or just slightly?” Macey shrugged as she takes one book from Calderon's stack and unfolds it to have a look. “How about you?” “I... do.” “Hmm?” If there was one thing Calderon was sure of, it would be; he has clicked on Macey's interest once more. The girl's eyes were glimmering in the dim lights of the corner they sit in, but he could see its shine.

For a moment, he just stood there with furrowed brows, his orbs fixed on the cover. “Zombies are Real?” he read, tapping his fingers on the book. Taking a deep breath, he averted his gaze to the books seated next to them. Using his free hand, he grabbed one. “Supernatural Being.” With his lips curled, he scanned them from back-to-front cover. Immediately after, his mind drifted without prior warning. Something about the titles probed his guts. He just didn’t know what. Should he believe these zombies and supernatural beings were true? If not, how could he explain what he’d seen the night before?
