It's one that mother got for me when we went out shopping. It's an old book on tactical warfare," I shout excitedly while practically shoving the book in her face.

“We’ll talk about that later. There’s something I want to show you first.” “What is it?” “My demons.” The words send a chill through her, but she follows him as he leads her back into the library. He walks to one of the shelves and pulls out a green leather-bound book. The shelf groans, then swings open, revealing a hidden passage. Her stomach twists. “Noah, what is this?” “Follow me,” he says, not looking back. The hidden room is dark, making Noah flip a switch, and the room is bathed in a deep blue glow. At first glance, it seems unremarkable. But then her eyes land on the far wall.

I heard the distant sound of his car driving away as I started to climb the stairs. Fumbling with the keys, I unlocked the door and as soon as I threw it open, I gagged. The smell was the strongest in my room. It was a wretched, putrid smell. Strangely, I could also sense some sort of green aura. I remembered reading from the book of Healers that green auras belonged to some of the most wicked and rotten creatures.

And now I'm ready for whatever comes next. I turn toward the tunnel exit. Toward the surface. Toward the people waiting. Toward my future. But as I take the first step, something shifts. Deep in the earth. Beneath the vault. Something ancient responding to the bonding. A presence. Massive. Old. Waking. Not the stone. Something else. The covers of the books were simple and nice to touch. They did not have the pictures that people usually see on digital books.

Sand begins to drain from its upper bulb. “This is what Grizzlebark meant, if we cross the forest before the sand runs out we will win a prize,” Van declared.
