Before l can think of something to do my eyes almost popped up from their sockets when Venus's shifted into a beast too. It split into four mandibles, lined with rows of serrated, yellow teeth. It was the size of a tank. It looked at me. Its eyes were milky white cataracts. "A Behemoth," I whispered, recognizing the creature class from the oldest Archives. "A Carrion Beast." The beast sniffed the air. It smelled the star-metal Heart beating in the center of the room. It growled. A wet, gurgling sound. It ignored me. It walked toward the Heart. "Hey!" I shouted. "Doggy!"
