Bootless, shirtless, barely more than instinct in motion, he ran toward the edge of the trees where snarls and screams echoed into the night.
The scent of blood hit him first.
Then he saw the boy. He was maybe six years old, cornered against a jagged stone wall, sobbing, shaking, wide eyes fixed on the snarling rogue closing in.

An unknown name flashed in his mind, and all the restraints inside Paul's heart snapped. And the next moment, his vision blurred.
His body surged forward on its own while a low snarl erupted from his chest, completely different than anything he had heard from himself before. There were four rogues, filthy and snarling, who had broken through the treeline.
