(Catherine POV) I pressed my palms against the tall windows in my chambers, watching the pack disperse below with conversations that would probably continue long into the night. My reflection stared back from the glass—pale, wide-eyed, looking like someone who'd just been offered a crown she wasn't certain she wanted to wear. Catherine Montgomery is my mate. Kieran's words echoed in my mind with the persistence of church bells, impossible to ignore even when I tried to focus on mundane details like the way afternoon light slanted across Persian carpets or the soft ticking of the mantle clock that marked seconds passing like water through my fingers.

Princess of the northern tribe, and the King’s future Queen. As long as you choose to remain here, you shall bow to me as future Queen.” She drew the battle line, but if only she knew that I had no interest in her King.

That fact was sure! But then I clicked on the next folder. Relationships. And my breath hitched. My finger hesitated over the mouse before I clicked the first profile. It was a picture of a gorgeous Lycan noblewoman named Lady Catherine. She had stunning silver-blonde hair, sharp, aristocratic features, and a smile that looked like glass. She was the daughter of one of the richest lords in the North. Beneath her name, a single word was stamped in bold, stark font: DECEASED.

He offered his hand and added, “Welcome to Colsier, the land of the rising sun.” Stepping out of the carriage, the very first thing that greeted Emery was the swift cold wind passing by. And the next person that came upon her gaze was a blond man seemingly several years younger than her. Still, he was taller and also bore the insignia of the royal family on his military uniform. She curtsied before him. “It is an honor to finally meet you in person, Prince Cornelius,” she greeted. “I am Emery Trigon, one of the candidates for the empress position.
