She looked at her companion and said loud enough for Caitlin to hear, “Hey, have you seen this one? What do you think of it?” The man wore a mask and carried himself with quiet reserve. “It’s… average,” he said flatly.

The people were silent, unsure of what to say. Malorie stepped forward, still gaping at the painting. “You…” she began. “It’s marvelous, isn’t it?” Cain boasted. “It’s...marvelously bad!” Malorie exclaimed. “What the hell is this?” She pointed at the painting consisting of stick figures in different colors. The shapes were off, looking like an artwork by a kindergarten student. “This is comic art!” Cain claimed. “This looks as if a child drew it!” she hissed. “This isn’t how you make a comic strip!”

She passes the pictures she is holding over to April. “Yeah, that’s it,” April says as she lays the photo in the middle of the table. “Does that symbol look familiar to anyone else?” The photo is of a craving on a cave wall. Well, actually it looks more like silver has been inlaid into the rock. There is one center image of a moon with a wolf silhouette. It has a circle of vines around it that branch out to each side to create circles around images of a wolf head baying. The two side images are mirrors of each other. I know I have seen this before I just can’t place it at the moment.

“It’s for a friend. It’ll be quiet. Honest.” She nodded. “Okay.” The gallery was tucked inside an old building with floor to ceiling windows and bare brick walls. Dim lighting hung low like halos above the art. It wasn’t the kind of place that screamed luxury it whispered emotion. Pain. Survival. Ava wandered slowly, her heels clicking softly on the hardwood. She stopped in front of a large abstract canvas. A mess of blues, blacks, and white chaotic but somehow beautiful. It was titled “Undoing.” Grayson stepped beside her. He didn’t speak at first. Then: “That one reminded me of you.”

I opened I*******m and typed in CV Gallery before I could stop myself. His account loaded, and there they were—his latest posts, as beautiful and haunting as always. Women arched in silk sheets, wrists bound in red rope, eyes blindfolded, mouths open in silent ecstasy. Men on their knees, backs gleaming, bodies offered up to the lens. Couples tangled together, skin on skin, lost in each other. All of them confident, sexual, unashamed. The kind of art that made you feel something deep in your gut—desire, envy, awe.

I nodded in agreement and followed my mom as we went into a room in the orphanage that was created as a painting room for the kids and she hung my painting on the wall there and I was the happiest to see my work up there on the wall amongst other kids’ works.
