The ceremony started at sunset. The garden glowed under the orange sky. Guests filled the courtyard, dressed in royal colors. Elders, alphas from other clans, noble families. Everyone was here. Serena walked down the aisle wearing a gold dress that shimmered with every step. Her smile was wide, like she had just won the world. Her hand slipped into mine with ease, like this was exactly how she imagined it. I didn’t smile back. I glanced at the faces around us. My mother’s expression was unreadable. Darian stood beside me as my second, quiet but alert. The High Priest began to speak.

I wrapped my free hand in the satin fabric of the dress, trying my best to control my anxiety as Alpha Kaia opened the book that lay before her on the altar. It was the Book of the Moon, the sacred writings that the Goddess had left for us. I had never seen it with my own eyes and, Holy Moon, just thinking that the Alpha herself was about to perform that ceremony made me tremble.

I would have to do something that made them end the ceremony without executing me for the insult. I decided to pay close attention to Damien's instructions.
