“Enter, mate.” Her pulse ticked up. “We need to talk,” Sera said as she stepped inside. Thomas did something he never did. He leaned back slowly in his chair and folded his hands in front of him—patient, open, waiting. “Okay,” he said evenly. “Talk.” That alone set her on edge. Sera’s gaze narrowed as she scanned the room, instincts flaring. Nothing was overturned. Nothing broken. No foreign scent. Then she saw it. A book. Resting at the far edge of his massive desk.

Thomas wiped sawdust from his hands before looking down at the pages. The title read: The Mountain That Changed History Thomas frowned almost immediately. Victor noticed. "You don't like it." Thomas looked toward the valley. "No." Victor looked slightly disappointed. "I thought..." "You wrote a beautiful book." Thomas interrupted gently. "I know you did." "But that's the wrong title." Victor slowly sat beside him. "Why?" Thomas remained silent for several moments. Children's laughter drifted from somewhere behind the house. Someone was playing the old piano inside. Maria could already be heard reminding everyone that muddy boots belonged outside rather than in freshly cleaned hallways.

She looked closer: Chris and Carmen. Wasn't Chris supposed to be off vacationing in Antarctica? "Thomas, are you feeling any better?" Carmen asked. "A little more recovery time and I'll be able to check out," Thomas said. Chris looked like he wanted to say something, glanced at Sharon, and thought better of it. She caught the hesitation. "You two go ahead and talk," she said. "I'll go check with Uriah on how things are looking." Once she'd left, Thomas said flatly, "Weren't you off raising penguins in Antarctica? Back so soon?"
