Ernest knew this from the quality Thomas had on Monday morning: the quality of someone who has read something significant and has had three days to sit with it. Thomas's reading quality was specific. He did not read quickly. He read slowly, carefully, the way he worked in the garden. He read in the evenings, after his work was done, sitting in his own kitchen with his own coffee in his own cup.
