Elizabeth opened her mouth to reply, but she didn’t get the chance.
“What is there still to look into?” The voice came from behind her, too loud for the quiet of the room. Elizabeth turned abruptly. Erik stood in the opening of the bookcase door, his hand still on the handle, as if he’d only halfway decided to come in. His eyes moved from her to me, sharp, probing. I looked up, caught his gaze, and recovered quickly. “The incident last night,” I said, as though we’d already discussed it. “Have you come to report what you found about the possible causes of what this might have been?”
