The Ex-Change
And those same, sharp brown eyes locked onto mine like she’s daring me to say something dumb.
She looks just like before. And yet, standing here now, everything feels different.
“Not a word,” she warns.
I bite back a grin. “I didn’t say anything.”
“But you’re thinking things.”
“Yes,” I admit. “Many, many things.”
She exhales, like she’s already regretting this entire encounter, and steps back to let me in.
The second I walk through the door, I take in the scene.
A pan on the stove. A very, very lifeless piece of chicken. A faint haze of smoke still lingering in the air.
