I was glad he asked, because I couldn't even find my voice to speak. "There are light mages and dark mages," Elder Fabian explained, sounding far too calm for the situation. "Light mages give life, warmth, and health. Dark mages... they bring death." I shuddered, a cold chill running down my spine. Thank Goddess I was a light mage. "Your magic broke free of its binds when it sensed you were in mortal danger," Fabian continued. "It recognized the toxin and expelled it from your body to save you. Congratulations, Lady Raven."

I turned to see them—Watchers, emerging from the shimmering surface of the wall. Their presence was commanding. They moved with precision, their black armor gleaming in the fading sunlight, weapons glowing faintly with a restrained power. The air seemed to hum around them, a tangible aura of authority. One of them stepped forward, a woman with a scar slashing diagonally across her right eye. Her cape billowed slightly as she moved, and the tattoo of an eagle’s wing marked her cheek, exactly as the stories had described. I recognized her immediately—the mage from before, the one whose magic can command thick vines from the earth. Her presence was commanding, her gaze piercing.

Uh oh… I shut my eyes as a horrible sense of dread engulfed me. “I do indeed, my King! I would be delighted to demonstrate some of those techniques if you so wish to see them.” She offered merrily. You can only use magic on another Mage without killing them unlike someone who isn’t a Mage at all. I’m the only other Mage in this whole palace... Lucky me.

“I'll eradicate every last one of them from the surface of this world, if I have to.” I followed the trial of the cart to an open valley. Meara's scent had just been there, or I could smell a drop of her blood. But something else was there with me. Dead carcass. Immediately it lunged at me as I turned to face it, but I was left stunned. My feral red eyes dimmed for a moment. It was a brown fur Lycan, only that this particular Lycan smelled like a vampire. I had seen this before. A conjuring—Necromancy. Such magic was forbidden, lost to ancient wars. It takes only a powerful witch to be able to conjure a soul from the underworld into a dead Lycan's body.

She opened it and was shocked to see two old women in an ancient apparel. "Sharon we got some grand mummies here." Maggie said. One of the women snapped her finger and a force threw Maggie away causing her to crash on the table scattering it to pieces. "What do i have with you women?" Maggie said staggering to her feet. The other woman clinched her fist and Maggie couldn't breath as she felt an invisible hand choking her. She Dropped to her knees coughing out blood. "Respect the elders of magic." One of the woman said.

Thunder crackled and an unseen energy swept everyone up as Lady Lucia watched in awe as red mist appeared in the air and the atmosphere became unbearably hot. The voices of the Mages rose in pitch and cadence, knitting together words she did not understand. It struck her as odd, and then she looked up, and the person standing behind Rage moved out of the shadow, and her mouth fell open. That tall gangly frame. Those black-as-pit eyes. Those evil hands moved in the air, weaving mayhem. It was the same being she had read about in the forbidden book of magic. The one that had children scurrying under their beds and adults shivering in their skins. . .

I had watched father read them a few times, so no doubt I know them so well. The witch seems to follow my line of sight, as she quickly reaches beneath the map and pulls out another paper, except this one is small and light, and contains a rough sketch of what looks like some ancient, forsaken building. “It is the forbidden Castle,” she says, rolling the sheet and placing it beside a pile of heavy, dusty books at the edge of the table. “These tell tales of a once flourishing Castle spelled a long time ago by one of my irate ancestors, Marina,” Marretje adds when she sees me stare longer than necessary at the books; little does she know that I have less interest in reading.

Kaen was awed and commented. " What? No... Why? Does silver eyes mean something to you?" Amber shook her head. " Naw, it's just really cool. We Versions are sometimes created based on skillful warriors. For example, I'm created based on the mythical Silver Dragon, which is why my magic is phantom magic. " Manor waved it offf. " Yeah! Yeah! I may not have his piercing blue eyes, but I'm created!" Kaen nodded. " Let me guess Saki The Demon Lord Slayer." I guessed.

I barely remembered running, but I did remember the piercing screams of Char while Leonora called after me. Mayhem: there was mayhem everywhere. I didn’t even recognize the foyer of the palace; it was completely destroyed. Hues of fire painted what were once the walls and floors. Magic etched in stone, taunting my very presence. I could hear the screaming and the killing as the battle continued. Bears were attacking wolves and wolves were desperate to protect themselves, but there was something in the air that drained their magic, that made them weaker and less able to defend themselves. My eyes found Mirage who was standing with her coven, the dark magic swirling around them, strengthening

Every scene has to feel alive—the characters, the tension, the moments that make you hold your breath. That's why I will not rush the process.
