Chapter 3 - The Contract The next morning, Elise woke with the taste of Gabriel still on her tongue and the faint ache in her jaw that made her thighs clench under the sheets, she had gotten home in shame last night but she enjoyed it. She lay there for a long while, staring at the ceiling of her tiny apartment, replaying every second of the night before, the blindfold, the ruler, the way he had spilled down her throat while calling her magnificent. The village moved around them like a patient animal that had seen princes come and go and had no opinion about either. A shadow passed overhead, sudden and loud. They both flinched. A helicopter? Here? The shape scythed across the blue, banking, vanishing. Nadai’s heart stuttered. “Did you...” “Don’t,” Elias said, too fast. “Don’t make him a miracle.” They stood. Paid. Walked again, less bent now, more determined, toward the bus that came sometimes and sometimes didn’t. Toward a night that would ask for another price. Toward whatever survived the day after you told the truth.

Chapter 3 Third POV The days after that night passed with a strange blend of normalcy and inevitability. Each morning, Elara rose with the first light, her heart heavy with the knowledge of her fate but her spirit unyielding. Her silver hair shimmered in the early sunlight as she tended to her small garden, the rich scent of earth and the vibrant colors of the flowers offering a brief respite from her thoughts.

They walked down the stairs — the full descent, the upper flight and the first landing and the aperture light from above and the lower flight and the shallower tread carrying the pace through the whole argument and the entrance hall and the covered approach and the three transitions in reverse and the street.
