Chapter 39: The Hallow Night Elias could not sleep that night. No matter how hard he tried, something seems to be waking up in his system. He got out of bed for a moment and decided to take a fresh air from the window. After meeting Rowan, he lied to Apollo where he came from. He doesn’t want to meddle with the two because he is not entitled to anything. He kept it to himself and left Rowan there. When he rolled up the shutter window, he was greeted by the shining moon above, full and round. It flashes as if illuminating the whole Northcrest. He saw the small houses in the distance lighting up like tiny stars. His smile faded as he watched them.

The camp woke slowly the next morning, the survivors moving like ghosts through the gray dawn. Elif walked among the wounded, offering what comfort she could, her hands stained with blood that was not her own. She had lost too many. The numbers echoed in her head like a death knell: seven hundred had marched south, and now barely three hundred remained capable of fighting. The rest were dead or dying, scattered across the mountain pass where Liesel's creatures had torn through them.

she snapped, though her teeth chattered as a particularly violent gust of wind rattled the door. Elias let out a dark, mirthless chuckle. He walked over to the bed and sat down, the frame creaking under his weight. He began unlacing his boots, his movements slow and deliberate. "Suit yourself. “A leader doesn’t vanish because the world burns. A leader walks in the ashes. Even if she doubts. Especially then.” Elira bit her lip hard enough to taste blood. Her gaze caught on the edge of a collapsed house, where charred beams had fallen across one another. Beneath them, half-hidden by soot, she saw them—faces. Three bodies, clutched together as though their embrace had been their only shield. She knew them. A woman who had once given her fresh bread when she passed through, a boy who had called her ‘Star-Savior.’ Their bodies now were stiff, their eyes dull marbles staring into nothing.

Everyone was happy. We had a perfect moment. That night I had a good sleep after a long time. Her black eyes were always the last thing I saw before I woke up screaming. The twins would be crying. Rowan would be holding me. Nyelle would be running into the room. But the children never came inside. Not yet. They stayed outside. Watching. Waiting. It had been three days since the birth. Three days since the door slammed shut. Three days since I held my son and saw his eyes glow white.
