Chapter Books To Read Aloud To Preschoolers Novels & Stories

Fair. Apparently being a baby wasn't a valid excuse. Reasonable honestly. Several minutes later she disappeared. God. Then returned carrying an alphabet book. Fair. A very large alphabet book. Reasonable. The kind usually intended for children who could sit upright. God. Not babies who occasionally sneezed at random. Fair. Then Lily sat directly in front of Peanut. Reasonable. Opened the book. God. And school began. Fair. "A." Reasonable. Peanut stared. God.

Nathaniel said. “Another one! Another one!” Sebastian requested. Alisa nodded with a smile. “You want another story, Ali?” Nathaniel asked his daughter. Alisa nodded. “I can’t hear you, baby.” Alisa swayed her body at first, then spoke. “Another one!” Nathaniel chuckled, pinching Alisa’s cheek lightly. “Good girl.” They hadn’t seen Serena yet, so they eagerly listened to another story. The last book Nathaniel read was 'Goodnight Moon.' It was the perfect story to get them ready for bed. As he read, he changed his tone and pointed to the items mentioned in the book. By the time he was done, the kids were satisfied.

Azalea follows and against me, my wife sighs happily. “I think if I have to read again about Corduroy losing his button, Swimmy and the school of red fish learning to overcome dangers together or Max being sent to bed without supper and traveling Where the Wild Things Are to become their king, I might be sick. Don’t we have any new books around here?”

I should keep calm. His children came, twice before the end of July. They were very happy to see her and vice versa. On the second occasion, Anuri gave both of them story books, beautifully illustrated. Kelechi got Pinocchio and the Beauty and the Beast. Ola got Sleeping Beauty and Cinderella. How happy they were. Of course, someone would guide them in reading the very simple English in which they were written. But merely gazing at the illustrations made them happy. 'Oh, K.C., see Rose dancing with the prince,' said Ola lightly. 'Pooh, see the ugly witch.' She frowned.

I asked, handing her a list. “Oh hi, let me see… Um, The tale of Peter Rabbit, Where the Wild Things Are, The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and Goodnight Moon. Wow, what an amazing collection you are after, you sure do know the best.” She smiled cheerfully. “Thank you.” I smiled. “You are welcome, and yes… we do have all of those. Just take this direction…” She said and pointed us toward the children’s section. My palms grew damp. I prayed Nikolai wouldn’t ask why.

“He said that his mom used to read that to him every night. She read it to all of her kids so much that she can now read it to her grandkids without the book.” “Did you have one?” “A is for apple, shiny and red. B is for boy who stands on his head.” Helen laughed as the words from her kids’ story book fell from her mouth. Reese chuckled. “Cheryl always went Where the Wild Things Were every night. I’m pretty sure that she tried to build a ship in her bedroom to float across the river.” “Oh gosh, I hadn’t even thought of that book in years.” “Heather kept each one of their favorite books for when they had kids. Grayson was the first of them to have kids and he got his.”

Brianna’s little hands grasp ours like we're a family. “Alright, Bri,” I start, holding the book out in front of us. “What story are we reading tonight?” “The princess and the frog!” she declares, eyes sparkling. Kevin groans dramatically. “You always read that!” I smirk, brushing a strand of hair from my face. “How dare you complain about such a masterpiece?” As I read, I exaggerate voices, making Kevin act as a cute frog, Brianna squeals in delight, clutching her blanket tighter when I narrate the part where Tiana becomes a frog too.

The Little Mermaid popped out at me, as did The Emperor's New Clothes, but I thought maybe a story that people are foolish in public wouldn’t be the best choice. Then I looked around some more and picked up Floca’s Moonshot: The Flight of Apollo 11, Lewis’s The Wolf, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, and Dahl’s Willie Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, and a few others. I paused at the Harry Potter series, but while the girls were old enough, being werewolves, for the story, I knew the sizes of the books would put them off. Next year, I thought. They’d have handled textbooks by then and wouldn’t be so rapidly opposed to books an inch thick or more.

The house was quiet; the nanny had already finished and left, leaving just me and the children. Later that evening, after dinner, I sat with the kids in their room. I picked up one of their storybooks. “Storytime!” Caleb clapped his hands, bouncing on the bed. “Alright, let’s see what we have tonight…” I opened the book. The pages showed colorful drawings of a family of three camping outside under the stars. I cleared my throat and began to read:
