My nephew just got into reading on his own, but still loves listening. We've had the most fun with 'Frog and Toad'. 'Well, it means pig-like... like you right now, covered in jam!' It worked.

We've also started 'Nate the Great'. The mystery format keeps him guessing, and the short chapters feel like real accomplishments. He'll often ask for 'just one more case' which is always a good sign. The humor is dry, which I appreciate more than he does, but the straightforward plots hold his attention completely.

I used to be pretty skeptical about this, because a lot of what I'd find were YouTube uploads of questionable legality that got taken down super fast. Things have gotten better, surprisingly. Author-run podcasts are a goldmine—some writers release their older, completed works chapter by chapter as free audiobooks. I follow one indie fantasy author who does this; she treats it like a serial from the old radio days.

Another angle is checking if your local library partners with Libby or Hoopla. You'll need a library card, obviously, but it's completely free access. The selection's huge, and you're not just limited to one chapter—you can borrow the whole thing. It’s the legal, no-guilt route. For pure chapter samples, Audible's free tier actually lets you listen to the first chunk of a ton of titles without a subscription, which is decent for discovery before you commit.

Sometimes I just want to hear the opening of a classic. Project Gutenberg has a sister site called LibriVox where volunteers read public domain books. It’s a mixed bag in terms of narration quality, but for something like 'Pride and Prejudice' or 'The Count of Monte Cristo', you can find a complete, free read-aloud. The search on that site is a bit clunky, though.

Chapter books are a fantastic way to engage young readers, especially when sharing them aloud! One title that comes to mind is 'The Tale of Despereaux' by Kate DiCamillo. I would break into laughter, and my readers would join in, creating a fun atmosphere. Reading aloud helps bring stories to life through the voices we give the characters, and I always found myself anticipating their reactions to the funny bits.
