I read my book. The chapter resolved. Not the novel — the novel had further to go, the chapter was a chapter, the resolution of this particular architecture of tension that the author had been building. The characters did the thing. I had known it was coming, had been ahead of them for a hundred pages, and it arrived and it was — the word was right. It was the word. The thing that happened when a thing arrived that had been arriving for long enough that its arrival was both surprise and completion simultaneously.

The difference is not small. She writes it in chapters that are not chapters — they are entries, the way the notebooks are entries, each one a day or a week of being inside the argument rather than describing it from outside. She does not know what order they will take until she has written enough of them to see the shape.

Sounds mad, right? But I forgot to tell you that the main theme for the novel is action before romance, so of course many action scenes would appear in later chapters of the novel. By the way, did they really never suspects Avery to be the mastermind of all that has happened? Might be because she is the daughter of the Marquis or something.
