A tingle ran through her fingers as she read one for casting light in the darkness. Confused she looked at her hands. They seemed to glow slightly. She flexed her fingers experimentally. A spark of light shot from them.

The second they turned the corner, Thess was on the gate. She didn’t bother with subtlety, her magic flowed over the lock like molten gold, melting it open without a sound. The door gave a faint click. We slipped inside. The air here was different, heavy, humming with old secrets. Scrolls floated in midair, rotating slowly. Books whispered to each other in dead languages. My fingers itched to touch everything, but I forced myself to focus. “This one.” I pulled Black Court: Lineage and Rise from its pedestal. The second it left, the pedestal glowed red. My heart stuttered. I shoved the book into my enchanted satchel, and the glow died instantly. “Ward breaker charm works. Good.”

By blood offered and power claimed, Let the chosen soul be chained.” As the spell was chanted, Aurora instantly noticed Nythera subtly changing a few words within the spell as though she were secretly sabotaging it.

I wasn’t sure when that had started. I had devoured nearly a third of it, and though I couldn’t remember every spell, I could remember the feeling they gave me Excitement. Tingling excitement. It was layered with dread, but it felt worth it. Some of the incantations were nothing more than chants for summoning light or binding simple objects. Others, however, spoke of “veils between worlds” and “shadow threads that cling to blood.” One spell in particular wouldn’t leave my mind. It was a severing charm.
