Townspeople.
They spill into the cabin like a flood, five or six of them, faces twisted with anger and something darker, something that smells of fear masked as rage. They’re not armed with guns, but I see baseball bats, a length of chain, and one of them is holding a rusty crowbar. These aren’t just angry neighbors. They’re looking for a fight.
“What the hell is this?” I growl, stepping forward to meet them, keeping myself between them and Cheryl. My voice is low, controlled, but there’s an edge to it that I don’t bother to hide. “You think you can just break into my home?”
