“How dare you leave town without telling me! I had to find out from your landlord that you’d taken off for some mysterious Christmas trip. What the hell, Eva?”
I laughed, the sound genuine for the first time in days. “I’m sorry. It was an emergency. I had to leave quickly.”
“An emergency that couldn’t wait for a text? A phone call? A carrier pigeon?”
“I’m really sorry,” I said, still smiling. “I should have told you.”
“Damn right you should have,” he huffed. “I miss you. I hate that I’m spending this Christmas without you. We’ve spent every Christmas together for the past five years, and now you’re off God knows where doing God knows what with God knows who.”
