with at least seventy-five percent of my senses depleted, it’s not much of a surprise that I easily make this mark with all senses on hyper-adrenalized-alert—right in the fucking Adam’s apple. As blood gushes from his neck, Chuck reflexively pulls the trigger on his gun, but it goes off aimlessly and harmlessly into the ceiling above. I suppose the ceiling would disagree with my assessment of the shot being harmless, but as a non-sentient being it has no say in the discussion. I cross over and kneel next to Chuck, enjoying watching the life bleed out of him. “Well shucks, Chuck, this sucks.” “I can’t believe you just said those words,” Jason retorts.

Mason came apart after that. He drank around the clock. He drank himself into a stomach bleed. The captain who had once led missions could not stand up most days. The squad cut him after he failed too many disciplinary checks in a row. He had no job. He had no money. He drifted around the streets all hours of the day. Sometimes he caught wind of me, on someone's phone, in a passing conversation. I had quit the office. I had become a novelist. I had taken what had happened to me and put it on the page. The book had done very well.

I spent the next few days in pain, and my energy levels were at an all-time low. Since I hardly checked in with Mom, I only managed to earn a few dollars each day. Nonetheless, Mom didn't seem to care or wonder whether a few dollars were even enough for a student's daily expenses. I suddenly found it all so pointless. After that realization, I began checking in less and less each day. I would survive even with just a dinner roll a day anyway. Whenever I got too hungry, I would drink some water. A dollar could buy me a big bottle that could then last me a week.

Bingo! Shira read the last part of the book for the day to Chuck while he listened attentively lying on his bed. Shira had a half smile playing on her lips. She was both sad and happy at the same time. She was sad that his condition had been declining in the past few days such that he had no appetite at all and his hands and feet were swollen. She was happy though because he had at least eaten a reasonable amount of food today and had been able to stay awake for the whole story.

And they knew that whenever life brings a bad night, they’d fight through together, knowing that afterwards comes the dawn of a bright new day. At this juncture, I Chucka came back to reality.. Chuckling to myself, I decided ot just enjoy the rest of my day with the pack. Tomorrow was a day off for us so it wouldn’t be until the day after that we did something about all this. ***

The Adjuster did not belong in the ruins of the In-Between. He was a creature of sharp creases and polished shoes, a man who looked like he had stepped out of a boardroom in mid-town Manhattan rather than the wreckage of a cosmic war. He clicked his ballpoint pen—a sound that felt louder than a thunderclap in the heavy silence of our new world—and squinted at his clipboard through horn-rimmed spectacles. "Out of compliance?" I repeated, my voice raspy and thin. I tried to stand, but the effort made the world spin. Silas caught my elbow, his own hand shaking. He looked at the Adjuster with a mixture of confusion and a deep-seated, instinctual dread.

Her eyes were fixed on Chuck, though, and when I turned to look at him, he had stopped mid-shift. Once the shifting process starts, it’s tough to stop in the middle of it. I could tell from the look on Chuck’s face that he was in pain, and he wasn’t pleased. His eyes were glowing yellow, and his teeth were elongated; fur started to sprout from his skin, and some of his bones were half-cracked. I looked back at Judy, whose hand trembled slightly, but she didn’t drop them. I could practically hear the rapid beating of her heart. Though she put on a brave face and looked like she knew what she was doing, I knew she was terrified of screwing up.
