The look he gives me is respectful but impenetrable.
“The kind he handles personally, ma’am.”
Claire decides she doesn’t want to sleep alone. She shows up at my door at eleven, barefoot and dragging the wooden box like it’s a teddy bear. She doesn’t ask if she can stay—she simply climbs into my bed with the naturalness of someone who has done it a thousand times before.
We spend hours under the thick Irish wool duvet while she shows me every photo, every note in the notebooks, filling in the gaps of a life I don’t remember living. Her voice grows slower, her sentences more fragmented, until it turns into the soft rhythm of a sleeping child’s breathing.
