All my classmates laughed and teased us again. "Guys, stop teasing me and Amber. If she walks away from me, I will blame all of you. And I will never let you copy again from my notes," Migz jokingly threatened our classmates while smiling. "Hey, don't do it, Migz. I'm hoping to pass just by copying from you and then you'll stop? Have mercy on people like me who like to copy," our classmate Henry, who is the number one person who likes to copy from him immediately complained. And Migz was the person he often copies because he is the smartest in our classroom and the entire grade twelve department. We all laughed when we heard what Henry said.

I said and turned my back, but before turning completely, I still caught their angry looks and I was more than happy to have made them furious. Anderson and I sat down, and while I was organizing my materials on the desk, he took one of the notebooks and a pen and wrote on the last page: "I'm proud." I smiled and took the pen from his hand and wrote in response: "I'm keeping my eye on the prize." He gave me a beautiful smile and I had already forgotten about those cows in my class. What I wouldn't forget was to tear out that page from the notebook later and keep it with the one from the day before and his other notes. I glanced under my hair at my classmate who was giving me a sympathetic smile. “Very.” I replied numbly. The girl grinned and said, “We are in subs next class. Mr Kilderman called in sick.” I snorted and said “Hung-over more likely.” I felt a pen jab me in the back and turned to look at a close friend. I say closer because the guy behind me is usually the one I pair up with for group work.

Majority of us were with extra pens, but it had been imbibed in us to take two pens into the examination hall so nobody was ready to leave one to anybody. "How can you be coming for me WAEC exam and forget your pen for crying out loud?" Queen rubbed it in. "I didn't ask you for explanations. You either help or don't talk at all!" Boiling ring Snapped. "Ehnehn! And I wanted to give you one of my pens since I'm with five but don't worry, keep blabbing on. You'll write with your whole body today. There's absolutely no difference between your short self and pens anyway" Queen teased.

King walks me to my class after I get the calculator and we manage to stop flirting by his locker long enough to move, then we start again. When we get to the entrance of the class though, we stop at the sight of Penelope standing at the door of the class, and it’s not seeing her that stops us, no. Penelope is also in a white tennis skirt and sneakers, and she has a black form-fitting top on. Her hair, however, is curled and in high pigtails secured with black bow ribbons. Her makeup is flawless as usual, and her lips are painted in bright red, the same shade of red that’s splayed on my locker in ‘slut’.

I looked through my bag and got one for her. I normally put more pens in my bag so that I could always get one to write, I felt the vibration of my astral mirror. I checked and the words were “attack” I didn’t understand but all of a sudden I saw that one of our classmates had secretly taken the pen I gave to Nora.

Classmates? I stared at Jenna Newson's face, my girlfriend of eight years, trying to find even a trace of joking in her expression. But there was nothing. She was serious, and... calm. I forced the corners of my mouth into something resembling a smile. The words "I was just kidding" that I wanted to say stuck in my throat. She called us classmates. Not even close enough to be called ordinary friends. I figured if the doctor hadn't called her, she probably wouldn't have come at all. But I didn't question her. I just smiled as if everything was normal.

My new classmate. She huffs before taking out her books from her backpack. When she opens her pencil case, she looks surprised that she can't find anything she can use to take notes. "Here." I smile, lending her one of my pens. She looks up at me with an expression I can't describe, but more like astonishment. "Thanks." She grins. "Anytime," I say as the lecturer enters the class, shifting our attention and leaving us no choice but to drop our first conversation.

In contrast, the works marked as "careless" were all done solely by the kids.

They grew up with hatred filled in there for each other but now they are here, having to work together to win against a common fiend who was challenging them. She gave the pen back to Amanda who had a nervous smile on her face for managing to throw a pen across the table with just a mere slip of her hand. Natalie just smiled at her clumsiness. Soon the class was over. The professor turned and smiled at the students waving them out of the class to leave. Even he wondered how come his two favorite students were not glaring or ignoring each other like usual. It was not a tense atmosphere in the class today.
