She said: "Yes." Maren said: "Because it has become familiar." She said: "Yes." She said: "The first book was loud." Maren said: "Very." She said: "The fourth book is quiet." Maren said: "Yes." She said: "That is the distance." Maren said: "Yes." She said: "Not from loud to quiet." Maren said: "No." She said: "From unfamiliar to familiar." Maren said: "Yes."

Before he could finish, a car sped in from the side, closing the distance in an instant. Bang—!

I saw this coming. We are about to miss out on Angela again, and it's not even funny. This is the closest we've got to apprehending Angela, and she's slipping away. “Hey, babe. Why did you stop coming?” Nicole waves at Angela. “Come over here with Kelly. There's someone I want to show you," he didn't stop trying to convince her to step forward. He was also pointing at Patrick and me. I disliked the attention he was drawing to my side. I wish there was a way I could ask him to stop doing that to me.

Short. Sharp. “I like it when people don’t overstay.” It wasn’t loud. But it landed. Even from here. There was a shift in the air I could almost feel. “Oh,” she said. Softer now. Less sure. Another pause. Then movement. Footsteps. Coming closer. I stepped back quickly, heart picking up for no reason I wanted to admit. The door opened. She walked out as if nothing had happened. Hair messy. Clothes are barely there. Confidence still intact—but thinner at the edges.

The small click of the notebook ring when she turned the page was as grounding as a deep breath. Not inward. Not away. Just closer. Lists. Lines. Timelines. What could be touched, measured, and corrected. She opened her notebook to the next clean page and let the pen move in straight strokes that did not wobble, even when her wrist wanted to. Her fingers smelled faintly of lemon sanitizer and graphite. She pressed harder than she needed to, as if the act could anchor her to the present.

File it away. Exactly where Celeste wanted it. Her phone buzzed. A message from an unfamiliar number. Unknown: You still close to her? Celeste’s expression didn’t change. She didn’t respond right away. Instead, she leaned back in her chair and considered the question. Close was subjective. Emotional closeness. Physical proximity. Access. Trust. Celeste had all four. She typed slowly. Celeste: Always. The reply came almost instantly. Unknown: Good. Just making sure we’re aligned.

She closed the book slowly, this time with a full heart. Because now she understood. Closure wasn’t a door slamming shut. It was a window opening somewhere else letting light back in. And maybe love didn’t vanish. Maybe it just changed shape. From something that held on, to something that quietly let both of them go.
