CHAPTER TWENTY – “Dragon’s Mark” Smoke rolled across Firespire Cliff like a low-lying storm, thick enough to sting Rowan’s eyes. The war had ended hours ago, but Arcadia still burned in places—bright sparks against the ruined horizon. She stood at the cliff’s edge, the wind tugging at her hair, the last of her blue flames fading slowly from her palms.

Night had fallen, and the sky was a canvas of swirling clouds, lit intermittently by jagged flashes of lightning. The air was heavy, vibrating with energy, as though the world itself anticipated the events to come. Eva stood at the edge of the cliff, the wind tugging at her hair and cloak, carrying the scent of rain and ozone. Her eyes glowed faintly, a subtle pulse of Flame and Shadow beneath her skin, reflecting the storm brewing above.

I saw everything happen in slow motion. When the cloud was a few inches away from me, a green light erupted from the Alexart and hit the cloud.

I hear the girl scream, all four fighting wolves eyes turn to her “shift now and let us go or I’ll do it” she’s holding Claire up by her neck as she’s tucked into her elbow. Claire desperately tries to peel her arm away from her. She’s holding a silver knife to Claire side and instantly I freeze. I shift “don’t you dare!” my voice booms across the trees and echos back to us. Claire’s eyes finally meet mine. Her gray every are filled with tears, she lets out sobs of confusion, relief, and fear. My knees weaken at the crumbling sight of her.

She dropped her head immediately, entirely unwilling to look up into his dangerous eyes, and silently prayed that he would just leave her alone. Alexander noticed her lovely eyes gazing frantically down at the floor, completely avoiding his own. He was instantly enraged. He desperately wanted to see her eyes—her beautiful, expressive green eyes that perfectly revealed exactly how terrified she was of him. He fiercely wanted to see those fearful eyes looking up at him.

Rage coiled in my veins, hot and black, my wolf snarling for release, claws itching beneath my skin. I ripped the blindfold free with a savage yank, her eyes—once sultry pools of deception—now wide and bloodshot, brimming with a terror that mirrored Clara’s from hours ago. But where Clara’s had begged for mercy born of pain, Lisa’s pleaded for oblivion, hollowed by the weight of her own venom.

But at that point her gaze hardened, and the minute was gone. "There's no other way, Ethan," Clara said delicately, and with a last, unequivocal signal, she raised the crystal tall over her head. The storm surged, the vortex turned faster and quicker, the energy coming to a crescendo that shook the foundations of the soil. Ethan, Selene, and Lena braced themselves as the air around them crackled with power. Suddenly, the world exploded, with a heavy flash of light. ---

ELENA’s POV A scream tears through the night. It is Clyde’s. He has been blinded in his remaining eye and instinctively releases his hold on the gun which falls onto the floor with a thud. “YOU BITCH!” Clyde roars. He is hurt and angry, but he is no fool. He regains his composure quickly and tries to choke me. How he continues to stand is anyone’s guess and I can only thank the moon goddess that he can no longer see.

"A tsunami slammed into the island right after we dropped her off. The water swallowed everything. We couldn't get back in time." The news smashed into Barrett like a wrecking ball. He released the guard and staggered back. Astrid's triumphant smile hardened. "Barrett, don't fall for it. This has to be just another one of Octavia's pathetic schemes to ruin our wedding." Those words were the last straw. Barrett whipped around, his eyes flashing with a murderous glint that made Astrid recoil. The restrained man she thought she could control was gone, replaced by a ruthless demon.
