My fingers brushed the worn cover, and it opened on its own, pages whispering as if impatient. The ink was black as pitch. “The frost learns.” Three words. That was all. But I felt the truth of them in the marrow of my bones. The seven had gone weeks ago, leaving behind an emptiness I had mistaken for peace. Now, I wondered if their absence was the very thing the frost had been waiting for.

She peered over the edge of the bed and saw the book lying on the floor, as if it had revealed some hidden secret. She hesitated, then reached out and picked it up. The cover was strangely cold—colder than paper should be, as if it had absorbed the night's chill or carried with it an unknown breath of darkness. She returned it to the table and turned again, pulling the blanket tighter around herself, her eyes squeezed shut. Yet her heart still pounded with restless anxiety, whispering that his fall hadn't been accidental, but deliberate.

And her whisper followed me down into the breaking dark. “You are already me.” I woke choking. The ground was cold and rough under me. My arms shook. My vision blurred with smoke and light. The taste of ash burned on my tongue. I was back in the ruins. The sound of fighting echoed around me. The beast still roared somewhere close. My mother’s voice cried my name. Jace was shouting. Damon groaned low and weak. But what made me freeze was the heat under my skin. The fire was different now. It moved like something alive, something that wasn’t listening to me anymore.

Chapter 104 Livia’s POV I was exhausted. Not the kind of exhaustion sleep could fix, but the kind that sat deep in my bones, gnawing, relentless, and unforgiving. “The Heart again?” I snapped, my voice sharper than I intended as I stepped out of the carriage. The towering structures of the central lands loomed before me, cold, ancient, and suffocating. The so-called Heart of the Lands. The place where decisions were made, and where lives were quietly destroyed.

But as the scent of her hair hit me—something soft, like vanilla and old books—I felt a jolt of something that wasn't in the contract. The "Cold Heart" was starting to thaw, and that was the most dangerous betrayal of all.

The hand with the mole touched my face. Her tone turned gentle. "Honey, can you please stop being mad at me? We've been fighting for so long. I really hate this feeling." I wanted to push her away, but my whole body felt weak. The alcohol had not worn off yet and I was still numb. Her bright red lips began to breathe softly. She leaned closer and closer, inviting and irresistible. If this were the old me, I would have already surrendered and fallen at her feet, but now, I just felt disgusted. I wanted to throw up.

I smiled back and the look she gave me is the proof that I didn’t do it whole heartedly. What can I do when I don’t feel that smile in that heart of mine???

It pulsed like a heartbeat against the cold lifelessness around us. Xareth walked toward it. My wolf finally receded, melting away into my bones, and I emerged once more, trembling, weak, every breath a battle. I had never felt this drained after retrieving a Heartstone. I felt hollowed out, like my soul had been scraped raw. But I forced myself upright, staggering to the side as my vision swam. Xareth stepped into the glowing hall and reached toward the source of the light. It wasn’t a weapon, or a jewel. It was a book.
