It’s a lifeline, pulling me back from the edge.
“Come back to us,” the familiar voices whisper.
“Mom i’m trying.” I say even though I know she can’t hear me.
“I’m here, Mariah.” My dad says.
His voice is softer than usual, filled with raw emotion and a tenderness that shatters the walls around me.
“Come back to me.”
Tears well up inside me again, and I grip that warmth, that connection, with everything I have.
“I’m trying,” I whisper. “I’m trying so hard.”
