Cain’s head turned slowly, very slowly, toward the commander. “Verek,” he said softly. “If you want to keep your command, stop talking.”
You could have heard a scale drop. Verek froze mid-breath, eyes wide, understanding the line he was about to cross. Cain lowered Kael not gently, but without injury and the young recruit crumpled to the ground, trembling.
Cain crouched, leveling his gaze with Kael’s. “This is your one warning,” he murmured. “If you ever pull a stunt like that again… dragon form will not save you.”
