The mirror in Connor's bathroom had a crack running through it like a lightning bolt, splitting his reflection down the middle. He'd punched it six months ago, the night Maya had walked into the Tidewater Inn and turned his carefully constructed life into chaos. Now, staring at his fractured face in the pre-dawn darkness, he wondered which half was the real him—the man who'd spent a decade running from his past, or the one who'd finally stopped long enough to fall in love.

I froze. A man stood by the edge of the trees, lighting a cigarette with steady hands. Smoke curled around him like a crown of shadows. He looked like sin in a suit, dark, dangerous, and maddeningly composed. His eyes didn’t flinch, didn’t waver. He turned the phone, the camera swinging around to a guy sitting on the edge of a bed, pulling on a shirt. "Hello, Danny?" the guy said. I froze. The voice. The jawline.
