Rebecca’s gaze lingered longer, dark and unreadable, before she turned to pour a glass of wine. By the time night fell, the house was quiet again. Claire’s friends had picked her up for a concert two towns over; she wouldn’t be back until after midnight. The storm from the night before had left the air thick and electric. The only light left on downstairs was the soft lamp in the living room. Sienna told herself she was only going downstairs for water. The kitchen was dark except for the under-cabinet lights. She filled a glass, drank half of it, and set it down. When she turned, Daniel and Rebecca were both standing in the doorway.

He had a pen and paper in his hand while he leaned in towards me with his eyes locked onto me. “Why do you have writing material in your hand?” “Oh! This? I just want to take note of what you're going to tell me. Understanding the state of mind that the spirit was in, she tried to smile mildly even though she was a little scared and explained her, "I have some special powers, which allow me to see spirits and talk to them. You can tell me about yourself, probably... I can help you." The eyes which had brightened after seeing Tian Tian talking and looking at her had, now died down again. The hope that shined in the dark light had vanished and the spirit again sinked deep into her sadness.

Jesse watched me with concern, and I stood there trying not to completely lose my mind. "I need a drink." I said and turned around. I headed straight for my purse as I knew there was nothing strong enough in the house that would help. I did not bother to say anything to Jesse as I left the house and headed in the direction of a nearby gas station. As I walked the sidewalk, I let my mind race. I had a ghost in my house. His name was Jesse Martin and he lived back in the forties. I assume the vision that I had of the gunshot in the basement had to do with him in some way. For someone who did not believe in this sort of thing, I gave myself a bit of credit for not completely breaking down.

"I'm not dumb enough to think a cop would borrow money from me. You think you can play me?" His face twisted with rage as he raised the leg of a broken chair, aiming it straight at Fiona. She screamed, "Please, I'm pregnant! I swear I'll pay you back. Just give me six more months!" The guy laughed, ugly and mean. "Pay me back? With what? You're good in bed, sure, but that's not worth 30 grand." Right then, the town’s loudspeakers crackled to life. But instead of music or an announcement, what blasted out was a recording that made everyone's face turn red. The unmistakable sounds of lovemaking filled the air.

"What? Are you serious? If I do not fight it then it will take over completely." "I do not mean stop fighting forever. I mean maybe you should try talking to it instead of just resisting. The spirit said it wants to coexist with you right? Maybe if you actually try to work with it instead of against it things will get better." "Or things will get much worse. What if I give it an inch and it takes a mile? What if it uses my cooperation to gain more control?" "That is a risk but what you are doing now is not working. The spirit is taking over anyway despite your resistance. At least if you try talking to it you might be able to negotiate some kind of agreement."

“I... I didn’t mean to—” “Your anger blinds you, Aaron,” the spirit’s voice softened, its luminous form beginning to waver. “But it also reveals your humanity. You are not alone in your struggles. I, too, have faced the depths of emotions. Your journey is not over.” As quickly as its anger had flared, the spirit’s energy subsided, and its form returned to its serene state. “Return to the barrier,” it commanded, its voice a gentle yet firm directive. “Confront your rage, and when you are ready to face the mountain once more, you may enter.”
