Pearl and Evren moved at exactly the same moment.
Without thinking, both reached for the shelf, catching its weight before it crashed into the nearby desks. The impact forced them closer together, their hands gripping the same weathered beam as dust drifted around them in slow, golden clouds.
For a brief second, neither of them noticed the shelf anymore.
Pearl looked up.
Evren was already looking at her.
Neither spoke until Astrid cleared her throat rather loudly.
"You know," she said with a grin, "that shelf wasn't nearly as interested in bringing you two together as fate seems to be."
