Nathan pipes up, “you’re saying ice cream beats candy? Every single kind?” “Absolutely. No contest.” “And soda?” “Still no contest.” “Candy, soda, cake?” They spiral into a ridiculous debate, tossing hypothetical combinations at each other like verbal fireworks. With each round, Nathan’s laughter grows, louder, uncontrollable, until he’s clutching his stomach, tears pricking his eyes. Carter leans back, chuckling, voice smooth but serious. “Okay, here’s the truth. There are only a few things I like more than ice cream. Books, coffee, Coco and Gabe, and… a very tiny handful of people.”

I bit my bottom lip, shrugging. "What kind of books do you mean? There are motivational books, novels..." I trailed off, listing various genres. Colby rubbed his face, frustration etched on his features. "The book I'm talking about is...dark. Dark romance." I cocked my head, signing, "I do read that. Why? What's wrong?" Colby's eyes seemed to bore into mine. "Then you might know...have you ever had any fantasies? Like, reading them, did you ever imagine..." He trailed off, his gaze intense.

It could lead to nothing good for me I finished making my first cup of coffee and went back to the bedroom to put my shirt on. I wandered to the guest bedroom to see if I could find a book that would keep my interest. I grabbed a mystery that had a cool story line, but on my way back to the living room I noticed a door. I mean I had seen it before but never wondered what it led to. Now I had time and I didn't hesitate. I turned the knob and felt around for a light switch as I stepped beyond the threshold.

"But I think I might prefer something a bit more... cerebral." Kora laughs, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Cerebral, huh? Why am I not surprised?" I turn back to the shelf, my eyes scanning the rows of books. "Ah-ha!" I exclaim, pulling out a hefty tome with a colorful, intricate cover. "This one looks promising. 'A Tale of Stars and Shadows.'" Kora takes the book from my hand, her eyes widening as she reads the title. "Stars and shadows, huh?" she says, her tone skeptical. "Sounds a bit too philosophical for my taste."

Before I could answer, she grabbed my varsity jacket and pulled me toward the back of the library, between two tall bookshelves. “Miss Voss, what are you…” “Quiet,” she hissed, pushing me against the shelves. “You owe three hundred and twenty dollars in late fees. And I’m tired of letting star athletes like you get away with it.” Her hand boldly slid down my chest and cupped the growing bulge in my sweatpants. “Fuck,” I breathed. Jolene smirked, stroking me through the fabric. “That’s what I thought. Big, cocky jock walking around with this heavy thing between his legs all day, but can’t return books on time.”

I read the titles out loud. “The Devil in Silver by Victor LaValle. The October Country by Ray Bradbury. Broken Monsters by Lauren Beukes. Last Days by Brian Evenson.” I curl up my lip in disgust. “This is your reading style?” I frown. He glances up. “I like horror.” I widen my eyes. “Boring.” His jaw ticks in annoyance. “What do you like to read?” I purposely bend over, revealing my naked ass. “I like raunch.”

I grin and she laughs. "Well if you ever need some real action, you know where to find me." She says, and we laugh harder. "There's this boy though, more of a man. I just see him around, do not know his name, or anything about him, just that he has a dark dress sense, and something undeniable melancholic about him, which draws me in. Everytime I see him, he's either listening to sad shit, like NF, J Cole, Halsey, or reading some exceptional books, that are sad, like Normal People, A Little Life, and I swear I saw him reading Harry Potter and V.E Schwabs Vicious." She says

I absolutely love the coconut smell on my skin. “Liam seems pretty chilled out about it, I don’t think he’s stressing too much.” I tell her as I settle on the lounger. I’ve spread my Frozen beach sheet on the lounger and am laying down on it with my book ready to go. I’m reading another Colleen Hoover book and have an Elsie Silver one with me.

I like taking my time, that way, I can get used to the idea of living with Xander. Sitting behind the counter in the bookstore, I listen to Vincent talking to his cars while I place an order for new books. One of those books is The Art of War by Sun Tsu. I want to read it and see why Alexei loves it so much. My thoughts turn to the BBQ, and I must admit, I enjoyed it a lot. And Rosemarie was right. Everyone seemed pretty normal. I don’t know what I expected. Maybe guns and men smoking cigars while plotting the end of the world?
