I’m expecting irritation. Instead, something like amusement touches my lips. Barely. She raises an eyebrow. “Was that a smile? Dear God, someone call the press.”

The hair on my arms rose, and a chill crept up my spine. Gavin noticed and wrapped an arm around my shoulders, pulling me into his side as we walked up the front steps and towards the front door. The door opened before we reached it fully, and we both froze in our steps. Coraline Blackwell didn’t step out of the house. Her small frame filled the doorway like a shadow that decided to solidify. She looked older than she was, but according to Selene, Cora was Zachary’s little sister. She had her silver hair pulled back, sharp cheekbones, and deep-set eyes that looked as if they saw straight through me. But nothing about her felt fragile. If anything, she radiated authority.

and truly she was right. coraline left the garden and went into the house so she could go up to the highest balcony and stare at the sunset like she did each day since she could remember... it was indeed a breathtaking sight that made her angry... but she enjoyed staring at it because it felt like a motivation to her... she wanted to know how gloomy the skin would be when she finally got what she wanted... she loved the Winter because the sun would be covered most time... Nothing pulls me out of a weird mood faster than doodling. As we go through the scene for the umpteenth time, I find myself doing rough sketches of the men in front of me. None of my drawings ever look particularly realistic - my doodles have more of a cartoony, comic book style - but I'm pretty proud of how they turn out. Once I've done Omar and Mr. Grand, I move on to the person I really want to doodle - Orlando. I don't get him right the first time. Or the second. Or the third. At first I can't seem to get his hair right, but by the end it's his eyes that are giving me the most trouble. Nothing I draw can capture how startling and direct they are.

I began to draw in the dirt, right next to her circles, tracing the outline of a simple flower with round petals. Several minutes passed in complete silence, broken only by the distant sounds of the other children and the rustling of the willow leaves in the wind. Suddenly, Sorine’s branch stopped moving. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her little head turn, millimeter by millimeter, toward my drawing. Her eyes, a deep, dark brown, were fixed on my rough flier. With a timid movement, Sorine extended her branch and drew a small leaf on the stem of my flower. Then she withdrew again, glancing sideways at me to see my reaction.

She was somewhere around seven or eight, completely absorbed in whatever she was drawing, her tongue pressed to the corner of her mouth in concentration. I lowered myself carefully into a chair near her, mindful of my ribs, and looked at the paper. The drawing was full. Not in a crowded way, in a deliberate way, like she had a clear picture in her head and was working her way across the page with intention. There was a dragon in the top left, red and blocky with impressive teeth. Below it, a woman in a red cape with a pointed hat on a flying broom, carefully coloured with a orange crayon. To the right of that, something with fangs and a dark cape that I was fairly certain was meant to be a v

But I manage it when she reappears with a checkbook. “Who do I make out the check to?” Coraline asks, her pen in hand. “The Swallowpox Foundation,” I say quickly. She nods and begins to write. “Your cottage is lovely,” I begin, trying to stall her a little while Delphnie chants again. “Why, thank you, dear,” she says, still writing. “I like it quite a bit myself.” “It’s quiet here.” I reach into my pocket and grab hold of the spray bottle.

Giselle’s POV I sat on the balcony, the warm afternoon sun dappling on my face as I bent over my sketchpad. A small smile played on my lips as I delicately guided the paintbrush across the paper, coaxing the vibrant hues of a delicate orchid to life. With each gentle stroke, the petals unfurled on the page, their delicate leaves and subtle gradient of colour emerging under my skilled touch. I lost myself in the rhythm of my movements, the brush dancing across the surface, creating a serene and beautiful image.
