I stood up with a groan, soreness pulsing. My steps were quiet and soundless as I walked through the darkness, my phone's flashlight bright enough to help me see but still too dark to light up the room; the blue shine dancing off the few whiskey glasses which sat on the small side table next to a rocking chair. Dust layered onto the hardy glass which had a victorian style flowers designed into the glass, a whiskey container which matched the same style sat near the cups half full. Moving the light and moving through the spacey room, my eyes then landed on rows and rows of not books, but journals; each one titled on the spine with a date and moving with a hot purpose, my hands found their way

The spines of the books seem to whisper secrets, their titles and authors a testament to the vast expanse of human knowledge and creativity. To my left, a cozy chair, its plush cushions and soft blankets an invitation to sink in and get lost in a good book. A side table holds a steaming cup of coffee, its aroma wafting up to tease his senses. The coffee shop in the corner, with its bustling baristas and gentle chatter, adds a lively touch to the otherwise peaceful atmosphere.

Daniel thought bookstores were inefficient. “Remember this place?” Harper pulls me inside. The familiar smell of paper and coffee hits me—sandalwood and possibility and all the hours I used to spend here in college, hiding between shelves and dreaming of a future that looked nothing like my present. “You practically lived here junior year.” Harper stops in the journal section, pulling down a leather-bound notebook. “Write in this.” “Harper” “My treat. Consider it a very late divorce gift.” She presses it into my hands. “Write everything you’re feeling. Everything you can’t say out loud. Get it out of your head where you can actually look at it.”

“Guess I’ll need security for Goose.” He smirked, his thumb brushing lazily over my shoulder. “I’ll take that gig.” The room smelled like candle wax and cinnamon, the kind of cozy chaos I’d once only written about. My notebook sat on the table, a clean new one with a sticker that read Book Two. I picked it up, running my fingers over the cover before flipping it open. The first page stared back at me, blank, full of promise. Goose flicked his tail, pressing his head against my arm like he was reminding me who the real inspiration was.

Warm palms, his thumb moving slightly, and I couldn't convince myself it was the champagne or the chandelier light or the weight of everyone watching us. BookTok has done irreversible damage to my brain. All it takes is one dangerous man, a hand at my waist and a low voice telling me to ‘follow his lead’ for my common sense to pack a suitcase and leave without saying goodbye. I pull the sheet over my head, giving myself exactly three seconds of mortified delight, then drag it back off and stare at the water stain on the ceiling. It looks vaguely like Ohio. My apartment feels smaller than it did yesterday morning. Reality presses down with the weight of poor construction and decades-old pipes

he began, "I've been thinking about us and the future." Cynthia looked up from her meal, her gaze soft and attentive. "What's on your mind, Roberick?" Roberick reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, leather-bound book. It was a beautifully crafted journal with blank pages, waiting to be filled with memories. He handed it to Cynthia. "I want us to create a journal of our journey together, filled with our thoughts, dreams, and experiences. Something we can look back on as the years pass." Cynthia's eyes shimmered with emotion as she accepted the journal. "Roberick, that's a lovely idea. I cherish our moments together, and this journal will be a precious keepsake."

Jewel appeared uneasy with what she perceived as happiness coursing through her like a wild river, and if she could just eat the books, she would have. She had nearly a hundred books on her bed when she finished the last one. She threw the empty box to the floor and grabbed her phone from the bedside table. She snapped a photo of those eye-catching books with enticing covers, then took a selfie with them. She logged into her social media account and uploaded the photos to the group chat. The warm, yellow lights of the coffee shop created the perfect toasty atmosphere to escape the cool winter chill. Zoe rubbed her hands together as she entered, removing her thick gloves and settling into a table at the rear of the café. The late night news hummed on the television to the left of her, the only consistent sound in the essentially empty space. Digging through her bag, Zoe grabbed out a frayed library book and flipped it open.
