little eyebrow quirked up ‘but these are both red’ Dylan inspects them both, laughing a little louder, “well these are two differences brands of crayons. so thats why.They won’t all be the same” ‘but red is red!’ Haejin enters the room and scoops her up from her chair with a laugh, “alright munchkin thats enough of color theory for one afternoon go get your shower done while there’s light from outside, this way mom doesn’t have to tell you later, hm?” Andre and Dylan are cleaning up the mess of crayons and sheets of paper when the lights come back on. It’s only when Andre is resting against the kitchen counter with a granola bar in his hand that Dylan gets this wicked thought.

Arjun said standing up again making her eyes shine in happiness. (Translation: Wait, I have better crayons than that. I'll give them to you.) "Colour?" She asked him excitedly forgetting all the gloominess away. (Translation: Crayons?) "Haan colour." He said confirming her words and went back to his study table. (Translation: Yes crayons.) Rummaging through the study table's lowest drawer he fished out a new packet of crayons and walked back to the bed handing her the packet. She looked at him innocently wanting to know if she could colour with them.

She doesn’t have time to chat with this sister of hers today. “Hello, Madeline,” Anny greeted with a smile on her face. Receiving no response from her, she continued. “Aren’t you going to introduce me to this beautiful friend of yours, sister?” Turning to Genevieve, she said. “Anyways, since she’s not going to introduce me, I’ll introduce myself. I’m Anny Crayon. The eldest and most competent daughter of the Crayon. Nice to meet you.”

I joined her, cross-legged on the rug, green in hand. "What're we building? Fort? Monster? Or... family adventure?" Angel nodded, scribbling furious. Her little shoulder pressed mine, warm, trusting. For a second, Mason's poison faded. This? This felt real. Until the crayon snapped in her grip. She froze, staring at the broken half. Then, eyes huge, she pointed at the drawing. At the spot where our stick figures stood. And there, scrawled in faded pencil, barely visible, like it'd bled through from the back of the page, was a word. And it wasn't her writing.

Arina’s POV The rain tapped softly on the window this morning. Kael was at his desk, coloring in the little drawing book I got him a couple days ago. It wasn't much, just a way to make him happy, but I saw he was using lighter colors. Not so many grays, more light blues. Want more crayons? I asked quietly. He shook his head, not looking up. His hair was a little messy, like he'd just woken up.

He bounced on his feet like the sugar had just kicked in. "There’s a book! And stickers! And crayons! And—wait—look! This medal!" He held it up again like I hadn’t already seen it. "Miss Tara said I got it 'cause I read the most books! Even more than Jake! And you know what? She said, "I ask the best questions in class." I crouched beside him, letting him pull out each item one by one. He kept talking. "This one’s a puzzle. I think it’s a rocket. I’m gonna build it when we get home. And this coloring book? It’s got dragons in it! Real ones! With fire and wings and teeth!"

QUINCY POV There were exactly six and a half crayons under my couch. I knew this because Eva made it her mission in life to find every single one of them before breakfast. "Found purple!" she cried out happily, holding the crayon high up like a trophy before crawling farther under the cushions. "But no orange yet, mommy." I leaned against the kitchen counter, drinking lukewarm coffee and watching her little feet sticking out from the living room as if they had a life of their own.

It was the start of a whole new phase of the girls’ lives. They too were facing a great crisis: picking out backpacks. Most of the back-to-school supplies we got for the girls were mandated not only by type but also brand. We got Ticonderoga #2 pencils, Trailmaker college-ruled composition books, 64-count Crayola Crayon packs, and Crayola Ultraclean Broadline Classic Washable Markers (10 count). The school didn’t care what sort of glue sticks or plastic folders they had. I had anticipated some conversations about lunch boxes, but Chloe wanted Barbie, and Grace wanted My Little Pony.
