“There’s a place across the street that doesn’t burn their beans into oblivion.” I smile. “High praise. Let’s go.” It’s sunny outside but not obnoxiously so. A breeze curls through the hem of my skirt as we cross the street. At the coffee shop, we sit by the window with our cups—mine caramel and cinnamon, his black and moody. He talks about his latest novel. I talk about my anonymous one. “I’ve always thought the best stories come from a place we haven’t healed yet,” Adrian says, staring out the window, brow furrowed slightly.

“That’s rare around here. Everyone else just writes checks.” Adrian laughed. “Yeah, I noticed.” They stepped away from the crowd slightly, finding a quiet pocket near a window that looked over the garden. Eli leaned casually against the wall, swirling his wine. “So, what do you write?” “Articles mostly,” Adrian said, tucking his hands into his pockets. “Some short stories. Nothing glamorous. Magazines, online journals. You wouldn’t know any of them.” “Try me.” Adrian smiled, surprised by the interest. “I like peace and Quiet. Most of my stories are about small things. A town nobody’s heard of. A man who grows trees in his kitchen. Real stuff.”

“Very well. Show me.” I leaned over the screen, scanning the half-done drafts she had pulled up. She wasn’t wrong: they were stiff, overly formal. Nothing about them felt alive. I clicked into one and started typing. “Watch this. Instead of saying, ‘We helped two hundred families this quarter,’ why not tell the story of one family? Like… here. ‘This is Maureen. Last month, she was worried she’d lose her home. Now she has a job through Golden Hearts’ program, and she’s saving to send her son to school.’ See? People connect to faces and names.”

The traveler didn't see four worlds fighting. They saw one world of incredible, impossible diversity. They saw a masterpiece. She poured this story into the Loom and let it flow out into the chaotic world, not directed at any one reality, but as a gift to all of them.

Each win got a candle and we had to buy more candles. And slowly painfully, beautifully we became a story no one else could’ve written.
