After I shower, I opt for a wife beater and a pair of loose-fitting shorts. My right forearm is still scabbed over from my latest tattoo. Every time I look at it, I am proud that I now have my pack displayed on my body. It had taken me a while to draw out the design just the way I wanted it to look. It depicts a full moon coming up over a hazy horizon. A wolf's head with bright red eyes is baring its teeth as it emerges forth from the moons' surface.

She could never have imagined that the brushes in front of her had been intended for guests. When the fog faded from the mirror, she opened her eyes and swore at her reflection. She could see the red and purple marks of the hickeys he had given her on her chest and neck. Then she put a trembling hand at the base of her neck. A kind of black tattoo had taken shape there. Three parts stood out. At the top stands the head of a black wolf baring its fangs. Then, behind the head of the animal, a crescent moon was drawn. And finally, just under the wolf's mouth, two elegantly intertwined letters: M.B.

I walked through its doors, down a seemingly endless aisle lined with the royal advisors, the guard—including Jordan—and the royal family, who stood closest to the reverend at the steps. I stopped at the base of the steps while the reverend recited ancient words. Then I knelt as he descended to me, continuing the incantation until the needle touched my skin. And she gasps, “Orion, there is a tattoo forming in my mark on your neck. It’s a crescent moon.” I am a little shocked. All mates get a tattoo like mark after they have marked each other. But never do they get matching ones. I will have to ask my mom about this. “We will look into what the symbols mean, my love. What do you say we go take a nap?” She smiles and goes to get comfy in the bed next to me.

I managed to push out a smile. I told her genuinely, "Thank you. But, who are you?" Her smile deepened on her lips. "I am Celeste." She sent a hand out to me, which I took, noticing the black tattoo that stood out on her wrist. It was an unusual tattoo, which seemed more like a runic symbol. It was of three crescent moons, all facing away from each other. What did it represent? "I'm Allyssa," I said, and she nodded knowingly with a smile, causing me to chuckle. "And you already know that. Nice to meet you, Celeste," I said, instantly liking her. It is funny how this night keeps getting weirder.

We ran through corridors filling with smoke. Heat pressed against the walls, making the air shimmer. Down spiral stairs, deeper into the temple's heart. The High Priest pulled open an iron door carved with moon symbols. Cold air rushed out, smelling of earth and ancient stone.

He stared at the ceiling as if asking the gods why they were doing this to us. Hey, whoever is up there, why are you treating me like this? I wanted to ask the same thing. “So, I’m guessing that like Ray, you caught my scent and a glowing tattoo appeared on your wrists. What shape is it?” I asked, crossing my arms over my chest. “A crescent moon,” Ray, Bill, and Neville replied in unison. “Dammit.” “What’s yours?” Frank asked, lighting the cigarette he had been holding in his mouth. “A waxing gibbous.”

But now, with them all gone, with all of the other changes, she was beautiful, and that wasn't a word she would have ever picked to refer to herself before. he asked her as she sat back down and started drawing. "He said his cousin did it for practice, that was back in September. It had a crescent moon with the tips almost meeting with a small circle connecting them. Here." she held up the notebook of the design. He raised a brow as he examined it, never having seen that design before. "I've never come across this before. It could pass for being a new style of tattoo work or maybe a lighter version of tribal? I apologize, tattoos are not normally my forte. I could ask the King himself, but I think his wife just had the twins."

I twist a little to the side so I can see it clearly—the mark. It's truly red, like a bold, fearless tattoo shaped like a sun with sharp pointed rays stretching out in all directions. At the center, there is a large crescent moon cradling a five-pointed star, as if the crescent moon is protecting the star. Around the moon and star, there are small dots growing bigger with each next dot, and below the crescent moon, there is a bigger dot and even more dots that trail down in a straight line, leading into two sharp triangles pointing downwards. How did this mark end up on my body?
