Their petals were deep violet, almost black, blooming despite the chill. “What are these?” “Belladonna.” She raised an eyebrow. “Isn’t that poisonous?” Rhys smiled without looking at her. “Only if you swallow it.” She glanced back toward the mansion, just visible through the fog. “Did someone leave that letter for me?” He stilled. His fingers hovered above the roots. “What letter?” he asked. She hesitated. “In my room. Crimson wax seal. No name. It was… left on my floor. Like someone had just been there.”

Day Five – The Cursed Forest This forest wanted us dead. Every step we took was met with shadows that moved when we didn’t. The mist clung to our skin like it wanted to drag us into the earth. Every breath we took sounded like someone else’s behind us. And now—day five—we finally saw it. The Heartroot Flower. Crimson. Vivid. "That thing doesn't like me. I see it in my dreams." She didn't ask what they meant. They bought nothing. They just stood for a while, then left. By the time dusk hit, the flowers had grown taller. Crimson petals opened toward her whenever she walked near. Not aggressive. More like recognition. She stared at the mirror one last time before closing. The cracks were thicker now, webbing across the surface like veins under skin. Her reflection met her gaze. This time, it whispered — barely audible. "Bloom." She closed her eyes. Felt it in her chest like a drumbeat. Something ancient, crawling, rising through soil, through concrete, through thought.

I hurried after her, the forest opening up a clear path before us as we pressed in. A group of squirrels up in the trees stared at us as we passed, seemingly talking to themselves. I stopped as we arrived at a part of the forest where long vines with colorful, pink, white and purple flowers upon them coiled around the trees. I reached to touch a pink flower and stopped as my eyes caught sight of a doe just a little way off, staring at me. As I looked deep into its eyes, the doe suddenly seemed to change, looking like an apparition with several feelers. I gasped in fear. The flowers I had wanted to touch also changed to tiny old gnarled faces with long knobby nose, making me skip backwards. I

I glanced at the little wall clock, thirty past two and the sun wasn't up and there were so many rain clouds in the sky I was sure it would rain again. We got to the forest—where I had almost killed Dawn—and Jereum started by ripping a part of his inner shirt and wrapping it around my eyes. "Okay, what are we doing?" I asked. "Vampires do not need light to see, I'm sure you should know that." "Yeah I do but—" "Ow!" I yelled in pain, as something hard collided with my head. "Less talking more blocking." "Okay," I said, massaging the part of my skull that had just got assaulted, "just tell me so I'll be read—"
