I smiled as I pressed another affectionate kiss to Ruby’s cheek. “She is…” Elaine murmured, but then her gaze lingered on Ruby’s eyes. A flicker of something unreadable crossed her expression before she tilted her head. “Are her eyes real?” I tensed, my fingers instinctively tightening around Ruby. It was a question I had expected but didn’t want to answer. Crimson eyes weren’t normal here. Yet, I couldn’t lie. “Yes. She got her eyes from my husband.” Elaine’s lips parted slightly, her eyes glinting with curiosity. “Red eyes are rare. She looks like a vampire.”

Everyone else is calm and collected as if nothing out of the ordinary is going on. I glance back over at the crying infant, her little eyes filled with tears that roll down her fawn-coloured cheeks. I wasn't used to hiding the real color of my eyes just because it's crimson red.
