Marcus followed with a short, “Cheeseburger, chocolate shake.”
The waitress scribbled it down and walked away. The food arrived fast—plates piled high with sandwiches dripping with cheese and sauces, baskets of crispy fries, tall milkshakes topped with whipped cream and cherries. The team dug in, moans of satisfaction filling the booth as they ate. Laughter broke out when someone dropped a fry in their shake by accident.
But Ethan and Marcus ate in silence, shoulders tense, bodies angled away from each other as much as the booth allowed. They took bites carefully, making sure their arms didn’t brush, their knees didn’t bump under the table.
