“Just let it all out. Don’t hold it in.” Her body shook as she cried harder, clinging to me like I was the only thing keeping her from falling apart completely. I pressed my cheek against her head and kept cooing softly, “I’ve got you… I’ve got you.” River’s crying finally slowed. Her breathing was still shaky, but at least the sobs weren’t tearing out of her chest anymore. She sat up, wiping at her swollen eyes, her scarf shifting slightly on her neck as she moved. “Are you ready to tell me what happened now?”

I was already dropping to the ground, gathering River into my arms, cradling his head like it was the most fragile thing in the world. “River,” I whispered, my voice breaking as tears blurred my vision. “Baby, no, no, no… stay with me. Please. Stay.” His eyes fluttered, just barely, and that was enough to split me open further. His lips moved, but no sound came out. A trickle of blood slid down the corner of his mouth, painting his skin. I pressed my forehead to his, rocking him slightly, as if the motion could keep him tethered to me. My tears fell onto his face, mixing with the blood, and I didn’t even bother to wipe them away.

The guy falls on the floor crying. I hug River and she looks up at me with her red puffy eyes. I pull her to my car and I open the door for her. She slides in and I get in the car and I start driving. River is still crying and I can’t help but feel guilty. I didn’t kill the guy. I just injured him so he can send the message to the girl that sent him. I bet it was Alicia. River stopped crying after a while and closed her eyes. She didn’t ask where we were going but her clothes were ripped and dirty.

River buried his head in the crook of my neck. His tears mixed with my own.
