Jada made a small, broken sound, half sob, half protest, and pressed her forehead against River’s shoulder. Her tears soaked into the filthy bandage there. Zoe watched them both, Jada’s quiet grief, River’s stubborn fury, and something in her expression shifted. Not softening exactly, but deepening.
“Then use it,” she said. “Use the hate. Let it keep you breathing until you’re strong enough to do more than hate.”
His cracked lips curved again, just the ghost of a smile. “That would not be long now,” he rasped.
